Ok well everyone has their moments that they wish they could take back in makeup when they first started out. Well I have had a few...yes I have muffed up some faces you would not believe. Now remember this everyone starts somewhere. So if you think your gonna go through the industry and not make mistakes...think again. So here are some personal moments, and things I have observed in It's Funny, But its not Funny!
FIRST TIME WITH LASHES!
For you first timers who put on strip lashes. When you tell a model or client to close their eyes when applying lashes. Don't I repeat, don't leave the lid closed the entire time when applying the lash. Why you may ask, well its a fact your gonna glue the eyes shut....yes you will. The heat from the lid causes the glue to travel and can possibly seep to the bottom lashes and adhere them shut. It's Funny, But It's not Funny!
BURNING A EYELINER PENCIL
This may be common sense to some, but for others who are not thinking at the moment...lol here you go. If you decide to burn a eyeliner pencil with a lighter (instead of sharpen it...duh), wait until it has cooled for at least 45 seconds to a min. Why...hmmm lets see, if you place a hot carbon eyeliner pencil on someones waterline, I can guarantee they will not be telling you how much they enjoyed working with you! It's Funny, But It's not Funny!
YES THIS HAS HAPPENED
Taking your tongue, and wetting the tip of your lip brush...eeeewwwh. Then using it to apply lip color on a client. Do you not think, they just saw you do that...lol! Talk about unsanitary. Please don't do this, there could be a fight in progress. It's Funny, But It's Not Funny!
EYESHADOW PLACEMENT...OOOHH BOY!
1. If you can see distinct lines in your eyeshadow, it means you haven't BLENDED it!
2. If you consider silver, black, yellow, lime green, or mountain berry blue, daytime looks...think again!
3. If your eyeshadow extends from the lid, all the way to the brow..smh...I will pray for you.
4. If your eyeshadow always matches your outfit, well I'm going to leave that one alone.
5. If you are color blind, purchase a color wheel. It can be helpful when applying eyeshadow.
EXPIRED PRODUCTS IN YOUR KIT
If you have products in your kit that have mold, stink, or bacteria you can see crawling in it....you might wanna throw it away. That, just ain't funny at all!

What YOU don't know, can harm your client!
Everyone please take this lesson as one to grow on. For those who are passionate about their craft I found this very insightful. Do you do a client consultation before you take on a new project. Do you sit the client down and as the following questions?
1. Have you ever worn makeup before, if so when was the last time?
2. Do you know your skin type?
3. What types of makeup are you custom to wearing?
4. What look are you trying to achieve?
5. Are you allergic to any type of makeup?
6. Are you allergic to animal hair?
These are just a few for starters. Why ask these question's? Well if you have been in the business and do not understand the harm yo can cause to someone, let me open your eyes. Makeup, especially liquid foundation on healthy skin, will penetrate the epidermis of the the skin. If the pores are large and open, it can penetrate as far as the stratum corneum. This is a fact. In other words, if you have someone who has sensitive skin, and you place a foundation that has a lot of talc on their face, you my cause, infection, breakouts, or a serious skin disorder. Not knowing whats in your products can be very dangerous. Three very harmful products that can damage skin over a period of time which most makeup is comprised of are: talc, magnesium, zinc, and some eyeshadows contain lead. Some time ago I watched client whom had perfectly healthy skin, go from healthy to very damaged and aged skin in less than five years. She told me what she was using and, it was causing all the natural moisturizing elements in her skin to appear non existent. The funny thing is instead of correcting the problem, she kept packing the foundation on heavier and heavier, because the sales person at the counter said that was normal. Really? Don't be afraid to tell a client that the foundation they are using is damaging their skin, and making them look a HOTT MESS! If you as the artist continue to allow someone to do that, think about the reflection it leaves on you.
***Now Here Is A Kicker***
How many of us have taken a brush theory class? Well I didn't think I needed one until I attended a fashion show and heard a model say, I can't use animal hair brushes on my skin! What...are you serious? Now I'm thinking, that's all I have in my kit..lol! Fellow artist, please take time to learn about your tools. If you don't know, now you know. I want to share with those of you who don't already know. You can purchase professional, quality, and reasonable brush sets @ www.morphebrushes.com. I recommend this site for those starting out and trying to build kits. You will love these brush sets. Stay tuned for more insight on the industry coming soon!!!

HOT MESS NESS!!!!!
Everyone that picks up a makeup brush is not a makeup artist, I know you all find that hard to believe but, really? Lets go over some of the makeup disasters that we definitely need to pray about!
1. If your Smokey Eyes have you looking like a raccoon, this may not be the look for you. This look is usually and evening look. Why are people wearing this first thing in the morning?
2. If you have full lips, bright red is not complimenting on a really dark complexion.....no its not!
3. If you have shaved all your eyebrows off, so you can draw them back on, make sure they are even. Then again, why did you shave them off in the first place hmmmm?
4. If you went to the nail salon and had lashes applied and they look like hard fans, that have crystallized to your natural lashes. This is not an attractive look. In fact your natural lashes wont be there much longer. FACT!
5. If your makeup makes you look like a Drag Queen, you might want to go easy on the application.
6. If you like to sleep with your makeup on all night so you can keep your look fresh, this is a no no. Makeup clogs the pores, you have to let your skin breathe.
7. If your face and neck are two different colors, you may be wearing the wrong foundation color.
8. If your face looks like a powdered doughnut after you taken a picture, you finishing powder is too light.
9. If you use your lip gloss over your eyeshadow....well lets just say Ghetto!
10. If you use track glue to apply any type of lashes, OMG!!! You will be arrested by the Makeup Police!

Makeup Theory of the Eyes
The Brows: Consist of three parts: The Base (also called the Head), The Apex which is the highest point of the brow, and the Slope (which consist of the tail).
What can be used on the brows? After shaping the brows a number of products can be used on them. Pencil, to fill in sparse areas, brow powder, brow tint, and clear mascara to create a natural detailed brow once shaped. Also press powder to set the brow so it looks more natural and less waxy.
Under the brow we have the brow bone. This is the area the arch is most prominent. Here you can apply, eyeshadow, concealer, or a neutral filler such as foundation. ***When highlighting under the brow area, do not highlight under the entire brow*** No professional magazine will reveal that, example Vogue. Only highlight the arch. If your not sure where to highlight, take your thumb and lift the apex, this will help you see it.
Next we have the Crease and Fold area. Here we can place your contouring color that blends with the eyeshadow color you choose. Mostly soft browns are in this area.
Our next area is the Lid. Here you eyeshadow colors are placed. Eyeshadow color should not be placed all the way up to the eyebrow unless, you are creating a dramatic look.
The Lid Base is where your liner goes. You can use gel, liquid, or pencil. This should be practiced to maintain a straight detailed effect and as close to the lashes as possible.
Next are the Lashes. Here goes the mascara. If lashes are sparse, you can use strip lashes, or individual lashes to give the appearance of healthier fuller lashes. Also a lash curler can be used to curl and compliment the look.
The Inner Cortex. Here is the location closest to the nose of the eyelid. Usually your lighter colors go here.
The Outer Cortex. Here in this location your darker colors are placed. Located further away from the nose.
Next is your Bottom Base or (waterline). You can use soft cream pencils in this area to give the eye an appearance of being open or closed. Remember lighter colors open the eyes darker give a more closed appearance.
That is some theory for the eyes, stay tuned for application principals and tools for the trade!!!!

Foundation Talk Part 1 of 3 Part Series
Today's topic is one of epic essence. Foundation is something we all see, hear, and talk about. Nevertheless, it is the most common thing we put on horribly wrong. Fellow artist, noone's face is one flat color, therefore your face should not look one color. Women should carry two shades of foundation. One is your highlighter, and the other should match your skin perfectly. If you use a full coverage foundation you do not have to always buy a concealer. Full coverage foundation can be a concealer and highlighter at the same time. (Industry Secret, not all artist use concealers). The lighter foundation can be placed in you T-zone or, highlighted areas of the face. These areas include, the forehead, center of the nose, under the eyes, and the chin area. Before you put on any foundation you must make sure your face has been, cleansed, toned, and moisturized. Foundation on dry skin in a dangerous disaster. Moisturizer allows foundation to transition a lot smoother. Make sure it is an oil free moisturizer. When matching your foundation, we have heard test on the jawline, and other places. Remember your face is not one color, so where to test...hmmm! Try testing right under the eyes, blending your highlighted area outward into your other foundation, if matched correctly you have a nice smooth transition. Now for photography mineral foundation is a no no, it will come out horribly despite what you have heard. I do not recommend mineral foundation for any photoshoot. The cameral lens will shoot right through it. Here are popular types of foundations used: Cream, liquid, press powder, cream to powder, and mineral. Always remember to set your foundation with a powder that matches your foundation applied. Make sure you have blended your foundation into the neckline also. If you do not set your foundation you may not have a long lasting flawless look. Remember an artist is as good as his or her tools, training and knowledge. Become educated in the industry, trends and take Crystal Wrights class. It will save you a lot of heartache an tears. This will
Makeup Artist 10 Commandments!
1. Thou shall not be known for creating the HOT MESS! Translation: If you think a client or model looks beautiful with the entire crayola crayon box on her eyes...please revisit that thought! You are the weakest link!!!
2. Thou shall not disrespect the client. Translation: If the client came in looking better than the makeup you orginally applied, Houston we have a problem!
3. Thou shall not change the pigment of the clients skin. Translation: If you turn a lightskinned model dark brown, or vice versa and think thats ok...you either need glasses, or a makeup foundation tutorial!
4. Thou shall not scare the client. Translation: If YOUR makeup looks like you put it on with a spatula, airbrush gun, and finished it with a smack by a large powder puff, do not expect the client to sit their patiently and smile.
5. Thou shall not steal. Translation: Going behind another artist client, or trying to underbid their price, as to belittle them professionally is tacky as hell! Get your own clients, and stop being a HATER!
6. Thou shall always be professional. Translation treat the client as if they were someone you valued in life. The first impression may be your last impression.
7. Thou shall know your craft and the industry. Translation: Take professional training from individuals who want to see you make it. Not from others who want to see you fail.
8. Thou shall recognize the HATER! Translation: These are the individuals put before you to do a job, let them do it! Their sole purpose in life is to discourage you. Know your worth and let them continue to hate!
9. Thou shall love thy gift. Translation: God has given us this gift, dont let it go to waste. A true artist never stops blessing others through their talent but, never give your pearls to swine to trample in the mud!
10.Thou shall be still. Translation: You can't become what everyone else wants you to become, be the artist God intended you to be, not what others desire. You will never please others, as there intentions are to please the world. Ours daily should be to please Him!
